New Displays

This morning I was on a mission to do some new displays.

Here are my cowls.  I even made a sign for each cowl telling the yarn and where to find the pattern.  This makes life easier for Jane, Cathy and Sarah.

I had this grid in the store last year and then we started taking it to shows.  It ended up in storage and my dad returned it to the store on Saturday.  It is going to be used to hang the Lantern Moon needles but I can't find my hooks so for now it looks like this.

Over the past two weeks I have been crazy making price signs. There should be a sign on everything now. Of course, now that I wrote this someone is going to come in this afternoon and find something without a sign.

Best Buy

It was another busy Monday.  I have new hair and pretty nails.  The banking is done and I ran to the post office with mail orders along with parcels for Beth.  Many things on my list didn't get finished so they will be on my list for Friday morning.

I called Beth and asked her what she wanted from the grocery store.  I was going to get some chicken for dinner.  She sent a list and then another text came through suggesting we go to Lonestar for fajitas and then do the grocery shopping.  Why not?  She was buying.  After dinner she hinted that she would like to stop at Best Buy.  Okay.  I can always find something I need.

She had ulterior motives for the stop.  She wanted an Xbox with the new Kinect.  Even better than a Wii.  From Xbox.com

Controller-free gaming means full body play. Kinect responds to how you move. So if you have to kick, then kick. If you have to jump, then jump. You already know how to play. All you have to do now is to get off the couch.

We now own an Xbox.  It is her Christmas present from me.  No, it won't be wrapped for Christmas-she is upstairs right now hooking it up.

I bought something for myself as well-iPad Camera Connection kit.  Now I can download pictures directly from my camera to my iPad.  Before I had to download to my computer and then email them to my iPad.  This will be great while traveling!!

We received a very small shipment of Triana today.  There is a bit of cream (40), black (49) and the sea green and blue mix (50). Hopefully more will be coming next week.

I need to go and help Beth hook up her toy.  Have a great night!

Title? Can't come up with one!

I was supposed to knit last night but wasn't feeling great so I laid in bed and watched the hockey game.  Why in my bed and not on a couch?  We don't have any couches upstairs right now.  When Beth and I moved into the house we waited until we found the perfect couches (or sofas) for upstairs. We thought they were perfect when we bought them.  They were brown corduroy type fabric.  Bad choice.  The dog hair was very attracted to the fabric.  Beth would vacuum them often but it didn't help.  The fabric was also pilling and I am not a fan of pills.  The cushions were not very good either and they became deformed very fast.  For Christmas mom and dad are buying us a new couch and Beth and I are buying each other the other couch.  We upgraded to leather.  Yes, the dogs will mark it but have been told that they won't rip it.  The best part is that they recline.  Dad and Beth took our couches out yesterday afternoon and the new ones are coming this week.

Today I did a bit of knitting.  The yarn is a light rose colour but I was rushing to get the picture taken.  I have a midnight deadline for getting this post done.  :)

It is very hard to knit while watching five football games and the Nascar race.  Here is the start of my Noble Cowl.  I am on row 26.  There are 28 rows to the pattern and they are worked 2.5 times.

There is a long list of chores for tomorrow. Jane is home from Florida and will be in the store.
-nail salon (I broke a nail on Friday)
-bank
-travel agent to renew my travel health insurance
-grocery store
-Staples for paper and printer ink
-get my health card renewed - how come I am having it renewed for the third time and some people still have their original health card with no picture?
-renew my drivers license
-get a new sticker for my car
If I write them all down then I can look at this tomorrow and make sure everything has been done.

The other important stop on my travels tomorrow is Maddison Avenue to have my hair coloured and cut.    This makes me very happy.  I tell Trish every time I see her that if I was to come into a lot of money I would have her do my hair every morning.  I love having my hair washed by someone else and then styled.

I made the deadline and heading to bed.

More Cowls

Elly came into the store today with some interesting patterns from Ravelry. I love A Noble Cowl and will be casting on this afternoon.  A cowl with a shawl pin-what a great idea.  Why didn't I think of it? Choosing a yarn was very hard.  A double knitting weight-there are a lot of options.  I decided on Mulberry from Louisa Harding.  100% Silk.  It is going to be beautiful.  Then add a Romi shawl pin.  Now I have myself excited.

You find out the most interesting things on Ravelry.  Rowan has put the cover of the spring magazine on their website.

Due for release on 15^th January 2011, our latest magazine is packed with the usual features, along with the three design stories. The trend behind the magazine for Spring 2011 season sees knitwear at the heart of the major clothing trends, somewhat unusual for a summer season. The layered silhouette and the general overall look will be the major factor for garment styling this season.

The Apprentice last night had a very happy ending.  Stephanie is gone.  Not a very nice person.  I'm glad that Donald didn't make a big deal about her being Canadian.  We don't want her!!

It's time to cast on my cowl.

Cowls

People regularly ask me if I get sick of knitting. This got me thinking. Of course this was last night lying in bed which kept me up way too long.  There are days when I really don't feel like picking up needles.  I am surrounded by yarn all day and sometimes when I get home at night I want to do something else like read a book or play on the computer.  Beth and I both have Bejewelled Twist on our computers.  She is much better at it than I am and it makes me mad.  I really, really want to beat her!!!  Now that I have put this in writing I have the urge to knit.  :)

Have you noticed a theme lately?  We have many people asking for cowls (or neck tubes) and I have had fun knitting some samples up.  Take a minute and go to Ravelry.  Type Cowl in under Patterns and there are 123 pages of patterns for you.

Survivor last night was great.  I love it when the person who thinks they are running the game gets voted out.  Brenda thought that she was going to be one of the final 2.  All through the show I thought that Sash was going to give her the Immunity Idol.  Right up until the last minute I was sure she was safe. The look on her face was priceless!

Lost in Transit

I have been asking my supplier where Touching Elegance from Kim Hargreaves is.  I keep getting the answer that it is coming.  Today I was told that the shipment was lost in transit.  Seriously??  Another shipment has left the UK and should be in the US next week which means we should have the magazines the first week of December.  That is the bad news.

The good news is that Kim Hargreaves Cherished is going to be here before Christmas.

And even better news.  I finished another project.  This is the Chickadee Cowl (free pattern on Ravelry)

Spring??

My morning has been crazy.  I saw my first sales rep to order spring yarns. Yes, spring.  We haven't even had snow yet.

Rowan was the first I looked at.  I can't show any pictures.  Rowan doesn't like anything to get out before the release date of January 15.  I will tell you that there are some great designs in Magazine 49.  In addition to the main magazine there are five more pattern books including two for the two new yarns being introduced.

Then I looked at Berroco.  Do you like knitting with Ultra Alpaca?  We have Tonal Ultra Alpaca (different shades of the same colour) coming at the beginning of December.  This pattern is a free pattern that will be available in the store when you purchase the yarn.  The picture really shows how the yarn changes colour.

For spring Norah Gaughan did her usual amazing work for Norah Gaughan Volume 8.  Origami will be featured again this spring with six new colours and a pattern book.  There are four new colours in Berroco Sox with a pattern book for children.

Impossible Model

Here it is-finished with the ends sewn in.  I haven't blocked it yet but it is definitely wearable the way it is.

My model was not the best to deal with but some days there are things beyond your control.

I love the finished scarf!! Leaves make me very happy and there are more leaves on my scarf than the pattern asked for.  I just knit until out of yarn. A scarf really can't be too long.

The yarn is very soft and feels great around my neck.

Today is my parent's anniversary.  47 years.  WOW.  I'm not sure who has put up with more in that time.  We are taking them out for dinner after work. There is no present yet.  We had no clue what to buy them.  If they want something they go out and buy it.  And after 47 years they have collected a lot of stuff.

Sorry Wannietta

A while ago Wannietta knit the Ginormous Cabled Cowl for the store. Somehow I totally missed out on getting a picture of it.  Sorry.

The cowl is knit in one ball of Mille Colori Big with 8mm needles.

The yarn is very inviting.  Multi-coloured that goes thick and thin.  Every time I walk by the basket I look down and think that I need to knit with it.

My day has been spent watching football and knitting.  The Leaf Scarf in Twinkle Soft Chunky is done.  Well almost-I need to sew in the ends tomorrow.

A bit of work was done today.  10 boxes are packed and ready to go to the post office in the morning.  Jane is away for another week (I hope she is enjoying Florida) so I will be in the store tomorrow.

Ringing Noises

The last two days have been rough in the store-the sound of slot machines were ringing in my head but I didn't get to play them.

An email came from Annie Adams and there are new shawl pins available.  They have been ordered and should be here by the beginning of December.

The Daisy Shawl pin is my favourite.  You will definitely see me wearing one of these. There is also a Daisy Button coming that measures 1.5". What a great button for a bulky neck cowl.

Speaking of bulky neck cowls there is a shipment of Twinkle Soft Chunky on its way from Classic Elite.  This made me go to Ravelry and type in Soft Chunky to see what people are making.

There were two, two year olds California Sea Lions.

They could swim around their tank and then jump onto this dock. Then they could go through the door into another tank.  It was almost feeding time.

The trainers would make them do tricks before feeding them.

I wish we could make Roko lie like this before feeding him.

This whale was supposed to drop the ball into a plastic container.  He never got the ball in while we were watching despite trying many times.

The trainers were measuring this whale. They put the measuring tape under his tail and moved it up to his head.

He just laid in the water not moving until they told him to.  It seems that training whales is much easier than training dogs!!

It's time to catch up on TV and get some knitting done.

Home Again

We pulled into the driveway at 5:30 last night.  My plan was to have a nap and then wake up to catch up on TV.  I was in bed by 6:30 (needed to do some laundry, etc) and woke up again at 10:30.  Decided to roll over and was up again at 7 this morning.  Obviously I was tired.

The drive home was uneventful.  We made very good time.  My dad accused me of speeding but I was just keeping with the flow of traffic.  :)

I plugged my phone in this morning to download pictures and there were 160 from the aquarium.  It is going to take some time to figure out which to use.

There are three Belugas at the aquarium.

It was almost feeding time.  One whale kept coming to the surface and making noises.  It was a lot like Roko when he wants his dinner.

Then we could go below and see them in the water.

There are many more pictures from the aquarium but I am going to save them for tomorrows post.

There are two hotels attached to Foxwoods.  This is a view from the 25th floor.

In the middle of this picture you can see a really green patch. There are two golf courses that I have heard are amazing. I can see a visit happening next summer.

I have been out to get my Tim's.  Beth swears that they put something in the coffee and tea to make you addicted. We laugh at home many Tim Hortons there are in Southern Ontario.  In New England there are just as many Dunkin' Donuts.

Before going to work I am going to try and get a newsletter finished.

Ski Jacket

Our morning started out with a bit of fun-no electricity in our hotel. Putting on make up was a bit of a challenge. Luckily there is a mirror right beside the window. Just as we were walking out the door it came back on.

We headed over to the casino for breakfast. The plan for the day was going to the aquarium but I didn't want another day of driving. We found out that the drive was only 15 minutes so off we went. Before we left home Beth threw our ski jackets in the car. Thank goodness. It was really, really cold. Most of the aquarium was outside and the wind was blowing. My car said it was 50 out but it was lying. It couldn't have been above 40. I had on a turtle neck, fleece vest, ski jacket and scarf and was freezing!!! I'm glad we took the time to go. The first thing inside the door was the Beluga whales. There are lots of pictures on my camera and I will add to a post on Friday. From the whales we moved to sting rays (Beth touched them but I wouldn't), big sea lions (I can't remember the type), black footed penguins, California sea lions and then back to the Beluga whales to see them being fed. Finally we could go inside to see fish and sharks. Beth pet a shark but I wouldn't do that.

The plans for pizza in Mystic were cancelled. I was so cold that I just wanted to head back to the hotel. We will definitely be coming back and the pizza will be saved for that trip.

Right now we are having a rest before heading back to the casino-Jackpot Party is calling for me.

The drive home will start early in the morning. That long boring drive home. There will be lots of TV to catch up on when we get back to Ancaster.

Post Take Two

Now I am not happy. I just finished a post and before I hit save my iPad switched to the main screen. The post is gone.

The plan for yesterday morning was the aquarium. Unfortunately this is what we woke up to.




I took this picture at 9:30. It was already raining and this much snow was still on the ground. We changed plans and went to see the Mohegan Sun. What a beautiful casino. Good shopping and eating as well. We had lunch at Bobby's Burger Palace. Bobby Flay did an amazing job with the decor and the burgers were amazing. I could have another one tomorrow.

This morning we were up early and on the road. That very boring road. Our destination-Classic Elite Yarns in Lowell, Mass. Thank goodness for the GPS in my car. It wasn't an easy town to navigate. Betsy, Heather and the rest of the Classic Elite staff showed us around. There aren't any pictures because top secret yarns and patterns were everywhere!!! I can tell you to expect some great things for spring. It took everything in me not to sneak some bags of yarn into my purse. :)

For lunch Betsy was taking us to a French restaurant. As I turned a corner I spotted the Four Sisters Owl Diner and screeched. This was on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Betsy said we could eat there and I was very happy. Very good food!!

Betsy gave us directions to the nearest Nordstroms but it was raining hard so we decided to head back to the hotel. I didn't want to be driving back roads in the rain and dark.

We got back safely but very bored. There certainly isn't much to see when driving on the highways here.

Beth is watching the World Series of Poker as I am typing. Bedtime is not too far in the future. Big day tomorrow-the aquarium and pizza in Mystic.

We're here

Last nights sleep was short. I was up at 3:30, then 5:30 and again at 7. I woke Beth up and we got on our way. The drive was just over 3 hours, most of it on that boring highway again. The last part was through a small town. Where are we going? The sign said two more miles but it looked like nothing but farm land. Then all of a sudden we could see it. Foxwoods. Huge. In the middle of nowhere. It was too early to get into our hotel so we spent time looking around the casino and having lunch at California Pizza Kitchen.

We are now in our room. The rooms at the casino were a price that I wasn't going to pay so we are staying at The Two Trees. There is a shuttle running every seven minutes to the casino. I can live with that. Our room is a junior suite which is great if one of us is having problems sleeping - this really means when Beth isn't tired she can watch TV in the other room.

For some reason I can get wifi on my iPad but not my phone. There were pictures on my phone for this post but I need to email them to myself so they can be downloaded on my iPad. Sorry.

Part one done

We planned on being on the road by 5 but I didn't get home from the store until 4:45. There was still some packing to do-Beth did my laundry while I was at work.

The first part of our drive took longer than expected but we made it to our hotel. Three stops really slows down a trip.

The drive was extremely boring. Absolutely nothing to see. No billboards. Very few towns. We had the road to ourselves. I'm not sure where everyone was tonight.

I didn't really expect our hotel to have WiFi but pulled out my iPad just in case. Who knew that a Super 8 would have free Internet?

I'm very tired so it is time to say good night. We want to be on the road early-Foxwoods is waiting for us!!

One more sleep

Where has my day gone?  The store was crazy today.  One of our busiest days ever!  Thanks to all who visited.  After work Beth and I took our parents out to dinner.  Beth saw mom earlier today but I haven't seen her in a month. Then there was laundry, packing, mail orders, a newsletter for Beth and last minute orders to be done.

My bed is calling but I knew that there needed to be a post.  I might not get one done tomorrow-we are heading out right after work.  Our hotel is supposed to have WiFi so I should be able to post on Sunday but I won't know for sure until we get there.

I have no knitting pictures but I will show you what I bought this week and Beth picked up before dinner. Two chairs for our dining room. Right now we have eight chairs but the table is large enough for more.  I saw these at Pier 1 a few months ago. Luckily I waited because they are now on sale.

There isn't time to write more if I am going to make this Friday's post.  Off to bed and dreaming about California Pizza Kitchen and Fuddruckers.  Two restaurants that I love-both are at Foxwoods.  Lunch and dinner on Sunday are already decided!!

All of a sudden I remembered that I don't have any knitting packed.  HELP!! What am I going to take???

QUICK Trip

I wrote the post about Cookie's new book earlier today and didn't get it published.  I decided to hit publish on that post and start another one about my day.

As you know we have been waiting for a shipment of yarn from Katia.  Where is the Triana and Ondas?  It was supposed to be in Toronto earlier this week and every day I would phone to see if it arrived.  I am sure that they were very sick of me saying 'Hi it's Julie from The Needle Emporium.'  The yarn finally arrived today and I made a quick trip.  QUICK trip.  From my store to Keele and Steeles, pick up the yarn, stop at Tim's to use the washroom and get a tea and then back to the store in under two hours.  Boy do I love the 407!!!

There is good news and bad news to my story.

Cathy dropped by the store this afternoon to get a quick lesson in knitting with Ondas.  She is now a master and can demonstrate next week.

I am going to finish a few mail orders and then start working on my scarf in colour 70.  The swatch doesn't do the colour justice.  It is light and dark grey with medium and dark brown.

You can print out the individual patterns as you need them and don't need to carry around a book.  If you are traveling you can have the patterns saved on your iPod Touch or iPad.  The disadvantage is that you don't have a book with pretty pictures to flip through.

There's a new Holster in town

Last night just before going to bed I received an email from Namaste. This isn't a good thing because it gets my mind going before trying to sleep-blog post, ordering, newsletter...

There is a new bag coming out and I will be doing an order this afternoon The bags are expected to arrive in port the middle of November so Namaste should have them by the end of November for shipping. I would expect that the bags will arrive here by the second week of December. Yes, just in time for Christmas.

Debbie does it again

It has been a paperwork day.  Cathy will be working next week and I want to make sure that everything in the store is priced.  There is also a binder now with solutions to every problem (cash register, visa machine, ...) and answers to questions before she actually has the question.  I know that when I come home the store will look different than when I left it.  The Clean Freak will strike.

I still regularly visit Ravelry but when I look at the Forums it seems like there are less and less posts.  Do you still visit the Forums?  Do you read items posted?

My mail for the day is done and I am thinking of heading to bed.  I can't do a post though without pretty pictures.

Here are some preview pictures of a new book coming from Debbie Bliss.

Angel is 76% Super Kid Mohair and 24% Silk Lace weight yarn.  There are 200m on a 25gram ball.  Debbie can't do a yarn with just four colours.  There are going to be eighteen amazing colours coming in November.

It is too late for me to think of great descriptions for the garments so I am borrowing the work from my distributors website.

Sleeveless dresses will gain a little extra mileage this season with a cropped shrug fitting closely around the neck and shoulders.  Knit in a watery shade of Celadon.

Capture the incredible lightness of air in a pretty shawl collared cardigan.  Knit in Old Rose,a flattering shade to cheer up the dull days of winter.

The temperature is rising quickly with this spicy little cardigan, knit in a complimentary duet of colour-Salmon and Tangerine.  

Seventh Avenue

Much of my day was spent in the car.  Post office, lunch to Jane in the store, lunch to Beth in the warehouse, bank for Beth and then onto Best Buy. I bought the new Office for Mac.  What a great program.  I am having lots of fun.  There will be new gift certificates in the store.  The newsletter templates are great.  It has me wanting to do a printed newsletter!!  I really, really want to keep playing but there is accounting and more mail orders to pack.

Plans are coming together for our trip next week.  We are leaving after I close the store on Saturday.  If you check online it says the drive is almost 9 hours. My car says 8 hours.  Maybe my car knows that I will be driving slightly above the speed limit.  :)  We just booked a hotel for Saturday night along the way.  I don't think I will want to do the full drive after working all day.

Some days Blogger can drive me crazy.  The post was looking good and then I added Captions.  When am I going to learn?  Captions throw everything into turmoil.  After much cutting and pasting I hope that this shows up okay on your computer.  Normally I would add this at the end of the post but if I try that then pictures will overlap part of the words.

An order arrived from Classic Elite today with the long awaited book for Soft Chunky.

This loose twist allows for the yarn to be knitted at a large gauge (1.5 to 2 stitches/inch!) while keeping the finished garments from getting too heavy.  At this gauge the stitches are so large that even in Stockinette Stitch, the stitches themselves become a wonderful design element. Wenlan’s designs in Soft Chunky are innovative and knit up super fast. For the color palette Wenlan chose a mix of current fashion and classic vintage shades. 

Endless Loops

I took a picture of this in June at TNNA.  I am not sure what to call it.  Is it a vest?  A dress? Whatever it is I really like it.

Soft Chunky is knit on 10mm-15mm needles.  You can definitely knit a scarf in an evening.
